The start of the new year has brought freezing temperatures that have thrown a wrench in air travel, resulting in widespread cancelations and delays. Across the U.S., airlines have canceled 2,700 flights and counting, with an additional 7,000 flights facing delays due to the severe winter weather.
Travelers flying out of Chicago’s Midway International Airport experienced significant disruptions with 30% of flights canceled, according to FlightAware. Other airports such as Dallas Love Field Airport, Nashville International Airport, and Buffalo Niagara International Airport have seen disruptions with roughly a fifth of flights canceled. Southwest Airlines has taken a significant hit, canceling 400 trips on Monday alone, which equalled 16% of its daily scheduled flights.
As the winter storms persist, airlines are diligently monitoring weather developments and adjusting flight schedules accordingly. Travelers are advised to stay informed about flight statuses as airlines continue to navigate these challenging weather conditions.
