Ready to start planning your trips for the year, but unsure of how to find the cheapest flights? According to a recent study by CheapAir.com, it’s a science that we’ve boiled down to a few simple steps.
Book within the prime window
The study, based on an analysis of over 917 million airfares across the United States, discovered the sweet spot for securing the best flight deals. Booking flights at least three weeks before departure and no more than 2.5 months in advance is the prime window for purchasing your tickets. Waiting until less than a week before the intended departure date could lead to paying 59% more. Similarly, booking too far in advance may result in much higher prices.
Book on Wednesdays
This study dispels the idea that purchasing on certain days of the week offers significantly cheaper fares. Data analysis reveals that the average low fare varies by less than $1, regardless of the day of the week. However, the day of the flights itself can impact prices, with Wednesday being the cheapest day to fly. Additionally, midweek flights tend to be more budget-friendly overall than weekend flights.
Be flexible
Rates tend to fluctuate, so keeping an eye out for cheaper tickets and being open to adjusting travel plans can yield significant savings. CheapAir.com reports that ticket prices change 49 times on average, with potential swings of up to $100. Some airlines offer more flexibility than others when it comes to change and cancellation fees, so be sure to be aware of your airline’s policies. Being flexible can pay off!
Keep an eye out for discounts
Many airlines offer promotional deals and discounts, so be sure to look out for deals your airline may be having. United Airlines has a dedicated webpage showing current deals and promotions, which can translate into substantial savings.
