Nestled among Paris’ historic landmarks sits the Tour d’Argent, a culinary marvel with a legacy that spans an impressive 441 years. The legendary restaurant that inspired scenes in the movie “Ratatouille” has recently reopened its doors, unveiling a perfect blend of tradition and modernity that captures the essence of French cuisine.
While the Tour d’Argent continues to offer its famed pressed duck, cooked in its own blood and carved in mid-air, executive chef Yannick Franques maintains the mystery surrounding one of the restaurant’s signature dishes – the “mystery egg” starter in truffle sauce.
Owner and CEO André Terrail spoke with Associated Press and emphasized the significance of preserving such culinary landmarks in French history. The recent renovation, undertaken during an 18-month closure prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed to breathe new life into the Tour d’Argent while maintaining its revered traditions.
What sets the Tour d’Argent apart with its reopening is its front-row seat to two significant events: the Notre Dame Cathedral and the 2024 Summer Olympics. Notre Dame is undergoing restoration after a devastating fire in 2019. For the Tour d’Argent, situated in the shadow of Notre Dame, the restoration brings renewed attention to this architectural marvel.
The 2024 Summer Olympics further add to the restaurant’s allure, as it boasts a front-row seat to the opening ceremony along the River Seine on July 26. Terrail views the Olympics as an accelerator for change, aligning with the Tour d’Argent’s decision to undergo a makeover.
The recently reopened restaurant has received positive reviews, signaling a rejuvenation of its cuisine and service. Michelin acknowledges the refreshing changes without compromising the restaurant’s fundamental nature. The redesigned dining room, featuring an open kitchen, and a luxurious top-floor apartment available for rent contribute to the enhanced dining experience.
