If you’re planning to pass through San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the coming months, brace yourself for potential delays as the airport embarks on a planned runway closure starting Jan. 16.
Closing Runway 28 Left is part of a comprehensive taxiway improvement project expected to last five months. The plan is to reopen no later than July 1, just in time for Independence Day. The primary objective of this $55 million project is to enhance the efficiency of taxiway operations, making it easier for planes to exit runways after landing. Airport officials emphasize that these improvements are crucial for safety and will align the layout of taxiways with the latest industry standards.
While closed, SFO anticipates a reduction in overall runway capacity, which will lead to potential delays for travelers. According to the airport’s statement, approximately one-third of both international and domestic flights may experience delays ranging from 30 to 60 minutes. This is particularly expected during peak times from January through April. Airlines are currently reviewing and adjusting their schedules for the final months of May and June to navigate around the ongoing construction.
If you miss your connecting flight due to these delays, you should check the airline’s app to explore rebooking options for the next available flight. Connect with customer service via phone to avoid crowded airport help desks.
